Work pants get destroyed faster than anything else in the wardrobe — knees, cuffs and pockets go first. What lasts depends on the fabric, how the seams are built, and whether the cut actually suits the way you move at work.
Cotton drill, ripstop or stretch
Cotton drill is the traditional choice: heavy, breathable and hard-wearing, though it takes longer to dry. Ripstop uses a reinforcing grid weave that stops small tears spreading, which suits anyone working around sharp edges or mesh. Stretch fabrics blend in elastane for movement — noticeably better if you are climbing, kneeling or in and out of a vehicle all day.
Cargo or plain front
Cargo pockets earn their place if you carry tools, a phone and a tape all shift. The trade-off is bulk around the thigh, and loaded side pockets can catch on ladders and scaffold. Plain-front pants are lighter and tidier — better for client-facing work, workshops and anywhere you are wearing a harness.
Taped, hi-vis and biomotion options
If you work near traffic, plant or after dark, look for taped pants. Biomotion taping places reflective bands at the knees and lower legs so the human shape is recognisable in headlights at distance — which is the point of it. Day-only hi-vis pants use fluorescent fabric without tape and suit daylight work.
Getting the fit and length right
Most people size work pants like jeans and end up with the rise wrong. Check you can squat fully without the waistband pulling down at the back, and that the knee pad pocket — if there is one — actually sits on your knee when kneeling. Buy the leg long if you wear boots; drill fabric shrinks slightly on the first few washes.
